  • 2. What is the all-in price to my destination? Get a single figure covering call-out, mileage and VAT. Refuse any operator who cannot give one.
  • 3. Is that the final price or an estimate? Estimates can become invoices for two or three times the verbal figure. Insist on a confirmed figure.
  • 4. When was the lift equipment last thorough-examined under LOLER? Should be within the last six months for commercial lifting equipment.
  • 5. Do you carry public liability insurance? Ask for the insurer's name. Any legitimate operator can answer.
  • 6. Will you issue a VAT invoice? Required for insurance reimbursement. No VAT invoice means the booking cannot be recovered from your insurer.

The most common overcharging pattern in the UK recovery industry is a low verbal quote followed by add-ons at the scene: a 'specialist lift' charge for a standard wheel-lift job, a 'contamination fee' for a car with mud on the underside, or a 'storage release' charge on a vehicle that was never in storage. These charges appear only when the truck is already loaded and the driver has no leverage.

A published-rate operator cannot do this: the rate is on the website before the booking, the dispatcher reads it, and the operator agrees to it. Any operator who is reluctant to send you a written quote before dispatch is operating outside a published-rate framework.

Operators found in the AA or RAC's emergency dispatch network are generally compliant. Operators flagged to kerb-crawling breakdowns on motorway service areas are not on any certified panel.

Take a photo of the truck's registration plate, the operator's hi-vis (company name and any certification logos), and the recovery sheet before signing anything. The recovery sheet must record: your vehicle registration, the condition at pickup, the destination, the price agreed, and the operator's signature.

Check the operator's company on Companies House while waiting at the scene. A dissolved company or a company registered two weeks ago are both red flags. The recovery industry has a long tail of sole-trader operators who are legitimate, but the legitimate ones have trading history.

After the recovery, submit a review to the certification body if the operator behaved unprofessionally. That is the mechanism that keeps the panel clean.

On an A-road or in an urban area, switch on hazards, place a warning triangle behind the vehicle where it is safe to do so (not on a motorway), and stand clear of traffic. Call the booking line or open the contact form.

Every figure on cheap car tow comes from a single source-of-truth table. The dispatcher reads the same band the customer reads on the page. The operator agrees to attend on the band. There is no surprise at the scene.

Insurance and reimbursement

Most comprehensive motor policies include a recovery clause. Where the insurer instructs us directly we invoice them and the driver pays nothing at the scene. Where the driver pays at the scene the VAT invoice is the document submitted to the insurer for reimbursement.

For a non-fault accident the third-party insurer is liable for the recovery cost; the driver's own insurer routes the recovery instruction. A flat 12V battery in a car park with a willing neighbour and a jump pack is a self-sort. A flat 12V on the hard shoulder of a motorway is a recovery, every time, because PAS 43 working procedure cannot be reproduced by a driver standing in lane one.

A simple tyre swap with a full-size spare on a verge with daylight is a self-sort if the locking nut key is present and the surface is level. A tyre swap on a steep camber with the spare hidden behind a boot full of luggage is a roadside-assistance call.

Out of fuel on a forecourt's doorstep is a five-minute walk with a jerry can. Out of fuel on a quiet B-road at midnight is a fuel-delivery booking.

For motorway recoveries the police-instructed dispatcher's reference is on the receipt left in the windscreen; the compound that holds the vehicle releases on payment of the published National Highways tariff. The tariff itself is available through the National Highways customer service line.

For council recoveries the council's contracted compound publishes the release procedure and the fee schedule on the council website. The fee is set by the council, not by us; we route the recovery but do not handle the release.
