The first sixty seconds after a motorway breakdown
Switch on hazard lights immediately, before anything else. If the vehicle is moving, aim for the left lane, then the hard shoulder, then an emergency refuge area. If it stops in a live lane, do not attempt to push it; exit on the passenger side and get behind the safety barrier.
Do not stand behind the vehicle. The single most common cause of secondary collisions at motorway breakdowns is a driver or passenger standing behind the stationary vehicle in a live lane. Get all occupants out on the passenger side and move at least 10 metres behind the barrier.
Call 999 if you are on a live carriageway and cannot move the vehicle safely. Call 112 if you are using a European SIM. Use the orange emergency phones on the hard shoulder, they connect directly to the regional control room and give your exact location automatically.
